Tanmatra
According to Samkhya Philosophy, the word Tanmatra means—"Tat Matra" i.e., "Only That" or "Pure Element".
In simple words, the objects of our Five Senses in
their most subtle and pure form are called Tanmatra. These are the root
causes or foundational origins of the gross elements (like Earth, Water, Fire,
etc.).
There are 5 Tanmatra in total.

Key Characteristics of Tanmatra:
- Subtle
Form: They are so minute that they cannot be perceived by ordinary
eyes or senses. Only enlightened yogis can experience them.
- The
Foundation of Creation: When these five Tanmatra combine, they
give rise to the five gross elements (Space, Air, Fire, Water, Earth)
visible around us, which construct the entire physical universe.
Let us understand these two points in more depth to see how
this process works according to Samkhya Philosophy:
1. Subtle Form (Beyond the Senses and Experienced by
Yogis)
In simple terms, our senses can only perceive or experience Gross
(Physical) things. For example, we can see a beautiful flower and smell its
fragrance. However, our nose cannot directly grasp the "Pure Odor
Element" (Gandha Tanmatra) from which that fragrance originates.
- Limitation
of the Senses: Our eyes can only see forms that exist in light and
gross structures. Tanmatra exist as such fine and pure energy that
they cannot be caught by any instrument of physical science or by our
ordinary sense organs. They are the "Pure Potential" of matter.
- Why
Only Yogi? According to Samkhya and Yoga
philosophy, when a yogi completely calms and concentrates their
mind and senses through meditation and spiritual practice, the level of
their consciousness becomes very high. In this state of deep meditation (Savichara
Samadhi), they are able to directly perceive these finest and initial
modifications of nature, which are the Tanmatra.
2. The Foundation of Creation (The Formation of Gross
Elements from Tanmatra)
This point is very interesting. It explains how this entire
visible, solid world is formed from invisible energy. This process of combining
elements is also called "Panchikarana". There is a
specific sequence in which gross elements are formed from Tanmatra:
- Akasha
(Space): First, the Akasha element is formed from the 'Shabda'
(Sound) Tanmatra. The only attribute of Space is sound.
- Vayu
(Air): When the 'Sparsha' (Touch) Tanmatra combines with
the Shabda Tanmatra, the Vayu element is formed. Therefore,
Air contains both sound and touch.
- Agni
(Fire): When the 'Rupa' (Form) Tanmatra also joins them,
the Agni element is formed. We can see fire (form), it feels hot
when touched (touch), and it also makes a sound when burning (sound).
- Jala
(Water): When the 'Rasa' (Taste) Tanmatra is added to
these, the Jala element is formed.
- Prithvi
(Earth): Finally, when the 'Gandha' (Smell) Tanmatra
also merges with the other four, the most solid element, Prithvi,
is formed. Earth possesses all five attributes (sound, touch, form, taste,
smell).
Conclusion in Simple Words: Just as the background
coding of a computer is not visible to us on the screen, yet beautiful pictures
and games are generated from that very code; similarly, Tanmatra
are the backend coding of this universe, and the Panchamahabhuta
(this physical world) are its frontend result.
The knowledge of Tanmatra is not just a textbook or
philosophical matter, but it is directly connected to our actions (Karma),
sins and virtues (Paap and Punya), and the path to liberation (Moksha).
According to Samkhya and Yoga philosophy, how
we can improve our actions and move toward liberation by understanding and
controlling the Tanmatra can be understood through these main points:
1. The End of Desire and Attachment
All the actions we perform (whether sinful or virtuous)
begin with sensory pleasure.
- Illusion:
We think we are deriving pleasure from a physical object (like delicious
food or a luxurious car).
- Reality:
But in reality, our mind is enjoying the hidden Tanmatra
(like taste or form) behind that object.
- Benefit:
When we understand that the external world is nothing but a play of these
5 Tanmatra, our deep attachment to physical objects begins to fade.
When attachment decreases, a person will not commit wrong deeds (sins)
driven by selfishness.
2. Control Over the Seeds of Karma (Karmic Seeds)
Whatever actions we perform are imprinted on our
subconscious mind (Chitta) as impressions or seeds (Samskara).
External objects (Tanmatra) act as the triggers that awaken these
impressions.
- When
you become aware at the level of the Tanmatra, external worldly
things lose the power to provoke your old negative impressions.
- This
stops the generation of new sinful actions, and old karma gradually
begin to dissolve.
3. Progress Toward Selfless Action (Nishkam Karma)
With the knowledge of Tanmatra, a human being
performs even virtuous (Punya) deeds without any desire for reward or
praise, but rather with a spirit of selflessness. According to Samkhya
and the Bhagavad Gita, when virtuous actions are performed without
desire, they do not bind a person to the material world, but instead open the
path to liberation.
4. Pratyahara and Samadhi (The Path to
Liberation)
In Ashtanga Yoga, there is a stage called 'Pratyahara',
which means withdrawing the senses from external objects and turning them
inward.
- When
you understand the attraction of sound, touch, form, taste, and smell (the
Tanmatra) and withdraw your energy from them, your mind comes
entirely under your control.
- This
controlled mind later progresses to Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi,
which is defined in Samkhya philosophy as 'Viveka Khyati'
(the realization of the distinction between Prakriti and Purusha)
and ultimately leads to Liberation.
In Summary: Knowing the Tanmatra means
understanding the 'remote control' of creation. When the remote control of your
own senses and desires comes into your hands, you free yourself from the cycle
of sin and virtue, and the path to liberation naturally becomes strong and
dominant.
