The First Step of Spirituality: Mastering the Untamed Mind

In the journey of spiritual evolution, we often look for complex rituals or distant philosophies. But the true battleground is much closer—it is within our own minds.

The absolute first step on the ladder of spirituality boils down to three sacred pillars of self-mastery:

STEP1️⃣ Continuous Self-Observation

Spirituality begins the moment you stop living on autopilot. One must understand a fundamental truth: the human mind can never remain completely idle or thoughtless. It is a relentless wanderer, constantly roaming through memories, desires, and worldly attachments. This non-stop wandering is the primary trigger for creating continuous Karma.

When left unchecked, this wandering mind predominantly breeds negative or sinful thoughts, dragging us deeper into the illusion of the material world. It is this unstoppable cycle of thought and action that keeps our soul bound to the endless loop of rebirths, completely blocking our path to ultimate liberation (Mukti).

Because the consciousness (Chitta) gets attracted and the mind (Manas) entices, the ego (Ahankara) directs the intellect (Buddhi) to execute the desire. Yielding to the mind's persuasion, the intellect submits to this command, and driven by the ego, forces the physical body into committing sinful deeds.

Driven by a lack of discernment (Viveka), the ego reigns supreme, completely failing to distinguish between Dharma and Adharma. Trampling over all moral grounds, it is this ego—the defiant 'I-ness'—that proudly commands, 'Go ahead and do it, we will see what happens!' Acting as the ultimate perpetrator, it is the ego that forces us to commit sinful deeds.

It is through spirituality that Viveka is awakened. Initially, it shields us from committing sinful acts; eventually, it even untethers us from the bondage of meritorious deeds, ultimately leading the soul to absolute liberation (Moksha).

STEP2️⃣ Absolute Purity in Thought, Word, and Deed (Mansa, Vacha, Karmana)

To elevate your consciousness, you must guard your energy. True righteousness means actively protecting yourself from committing any sin or creating negative karma through three channels:

Mansa: Keeping your thoughts pure and untainted all the time

Vacha: Speaking only truth that is laced with kindness and purpose.

Karmana: Ensuring your actions cause no harm to any living soul or mother nature.

But how can one do that with ease? 👇

STEP3️⃣ Cutting Down the Negative & Dragging the Mind to the Supreme Being; God

The mind, by its very nature, will wander. It will invite dark, impure, or distracting thoughts. The real Sadhana is not about having a completely thoughtless mind right away; in fact, it is impossible to attain that. It is about having the strength to cut down every negative thought the very moment it arises. You must forcefully, yet gently, drag your wandering mind back and anchor it deeply in the remembrance of your Ishta.
