Maya

What is Maya?

In Sanatan tradition, Maya is considered the most mysterious power of the universe. In simple words, that which is not real but still appears to be real is Maya. It is the cosmic illusion or the divine power of the Almighty that veils the ultimate truth and projects this temporary, material world as the only reality. Just like a magician creates an illusion on stage and people perceive it as real, Maya keeps us entangled in the colorful web of this worldly existence. It places a veil of ignorance over the soul, making a human being forget their true divine nature and mistake themselves to be just this physical body.

How Does a Human Get Trapped in Maya?

A human's entrapment in this illusion begins through their senses and desires. Our eyes, ears, and mind are constantly running toward the pleasures of the external world. When a person derives pleasure from any object, individual, or status, it gives rise to 'Ego' and 'Attachment' (the feeling of "This is mine" and "I am the doer"). This web of wealth, property, family, and social prestige is so beautifully woven that a person gets completely lost in it. They forget that everything in this material world is temporary. Mistaking momentary worldly pleasures for permanent happiness and chasing them relentlessly is the ultimate trap of Maya.

Why is it So Difficult to Escape This Trap?

Escaping this labyrinth is incredibly difficult because Maya is extremely subtle and mesmerizing. The moment a human experiences sorrow, Maya immediately tempts them with the hope of a new pleasure. Just when a person thinks about detaching themselves from this worldly web, family responsibilities, societal fear, or a new desire pulls them right back in. Humans become so deeply attached to their false identity (like their name, possessions, and status) that letting it go feels like facing death. Until the power of spiritual discernment (Viveka) awakens within and one surrenders their intellect to the divine, completely breaking free from this deep quicksand remains nearly impossible.
